IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN

I love to walk through my kitchen late at night, when the only light is coming from another room, and the dishes are all either put away or in the dishwasher, and the counters are clean and wiped down, and everything is in its place.

I love the way the light gleams on the counters, and on the appliances, and on the cabinets.

I love opening up the refrigerators and seeing that they are full of food.

They have roast beef, pastrami, ham, cheese, turkey, watermelon, a pound of crab meat, yogurt, eggs, milk, orange juice, bread, mayonnaise, vegetables, and a bazillion kinds of salad dressing and hot sauce, and the freezers are full, too.

If we were attacked by terrorists, we wouldn't need groceries for days.
